LHSAA sanctions Belaire for violation

Belaire High became one of the first schools sanctioned by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association for a rules violation in 2014-15.

The self-reported violation was a minor infraction, a violation of sports seasons/summer activities in football. It was released to the media Wednesday.

The Bengals put on shoulder pads a day earlier than allowed under LHSAA rules and were fined $50.

BHS also practiced the next day without pads to compensate, and Bengals coach Keith Woods was ordered to attend an LHSAA handbook certification class and to complete an online fundamentals of coaching class.

“It was a misinterpretation,” Belaire Athletic Donnell Hyde said. “The rule says a minimum of three days before using should pads and we got hung up on the third day wording.

“Our kids are excited and, I guess that factored in too. They know they’re getting new white uniforms this year and, they know we’re going to play games at our school.

“We got a little ahead of ourselves.”

Woodlawn-Shreveport was sanctioned for having an ineligible player based on the LHSAA’s transfer rules. The player was ruled ineligible for one calendar year, and the school also was fined $50.

Guice moves up

Catholic High running back Derrius Guice made a huge leap in Rivals.com Rivals 100 list for 2015 recruits. The senior who is committed to LSU jumped from No. 102 to No. 40 on Rivals’ most recent national list.

Guice’s jump up the recruiting chart comes after a series of impressive performances at summer camps. Warren Easton wide receiver Tyron Johnson continues to be the state’s top recruit and is rated No. 13 nationally.

When Rivals releases its new state rankings, Guice should leap over the previous No. 2 player, Newman running back Kendall Bussey, a Nebraska commitment. Bussey is listed at No. 91 on Rivals’ new national rankings.
