Cooks, who through two preseason victories has six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, had a light fever before it was decided he would sit out the practice. Cornerback Keenan Lewis also missed practice Monday. Lewis left Friday night's exhibition at home against the Titans early with an apparent foot injury, and Payton on Monday said the cornerback was "just working through rehab" without elaborating. Others who were not present Monday were fullback Erik Lorig (leg), wide receiver Andy Tanner and safety Jairus Byrd (back). Payton said Byrd may return to full drills Monday for the first time since having minor back surgery in May, but the coach had no update to offer on his safety. Others present but not in pads included linebacker Victor Butler, cornerback Terrence Frederick, cornerback Rod Sweeting, cornerback Patrick Robinson and linebacker Khairi Fortt. Meanwhile, veteran cornerback Champ Bailey was in pads for a walkthrough but mostly observed the rest of the way. And Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs stopped practicing early. He was seen having his ankle get taped up. Prior to Monday, Grubbs missed some training camp and offseason practices as well as the Saints' two exhibitions with what he described as a back problem.
