Fire insurance decrease

Commissioner of Insurance Jim Donelon said some Iberville Parish homeowners living in First District 5 in Grosse Tete can expect a reduction in their fire insurance premiums, effective Aug. 11.

The premium reductions are being driven by the district’s improvement with its fire protection rating from the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana.

All fire districts are rated by PIAL on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 representing no fire protection and 1 being the best.

Fire District 5 Grosse Tete improved its score from Class 6 to Class 5.

According to the news release, fire insurance for a home valued at $150,000 will likely drop to approximately $1,332 annually under the new rating. Under its previous rating, those homeowners were paying approximately $1,438 annually, the release states.

The amount of the premium rate reduction will vary depending on the value of the property, the fire district where the property is located and the rate schedule of the company insuring the property.
