Around the Westside for Oct. 3, 2012
Community Field opens Friday
The city of New Roads celebrates the opening of its new Community Field with a special inaugural ceremony just before Friday night’s football game between Catholic of Pointe Coupee and St. Edmund High School.
Mayor Robert Myer said the ceremony will begin at 7:15 p.m. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
The new field’s construction is the second phase of the city’s Community Park Revitalization Project.
The first phase was the renovation of the old historic cotton mill, which is adjacent to the field.
The third phase of the park’s construction will include community green space, a splash pad, skate park and walking trails.
Cancer fundraiser
The American Cancer Society will host its “Relay For Life” fundraiser from 5 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday at the Scott Civic Center in New Roads.
The 12-hour event’s opening ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.
Organizers say the relay will be jam-packed with fun for the entire family.
If you would like to join the fight, contact Gwen David at (225) 268-1170.
Volunteers are still needed.

The deadline is Oct. 19.
