Around the Westside for Sept. 5, 2012

Faye Phillips will discuss “The History of West Baton Rouge Parish: People, Places, Progress” at the Ethel Claiborne Dameron Lecture Series at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at the West Baton Rouge Museum in Port Allen.

The event is sponsored by the West Baton Rouge Historical Association, which contracted Phillips to write an undated history of the parish in honor of the Bicentennial of Louisiana’s statehood in 2012.

The book is a comprehensive publication that start s readers with the 17th-century discovery of the area now called West Baton Rouge Parish, organizers said.

Readers will not only experience the age of steamboats and frontiersmen, but they will discover the complexity of a parish adapting to various influences of the 20th century and beyond, organizers said.

Phillips will sign books and refreshments will follow the lecture.

The event is free and open to the public.

Rockin’ and Roasting

The Greater Pointe Coupee Chamber of Commerce will host a barbecue cook-off and fishing tournament called “Rockin’ & Roasting on the River” Sept. 28 and Sept. 29 at Morrison Parkway in New Roads.

The event will feature food, refreshments, live music, a raffle, arts and crafts booths, a boat parade and a youth fishing tournament.

The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 with live music by Dale Sellars and Backroads Band.

The daylong list of activities starts with a barbecue cook-off at 8 a.m. Sept. 29.

The youth fishing tournament will take place from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday.

The children’s tournament is open to those 14 years old and younger. Registration is $5 per person and will begin at 7 a.m. under the white tent at Morrison Parkway.

A trophy and $100 cash prize will be awarded for the biggest bass, catfish and bream.

Photo opportunity

Iberville Parish is accepting photographs of veterans to display on the Iberville Wall of Veterans.

The Wall of Veterans at the Iberville Veterans Memorial in Plaquemine honors veterans and active-duty military personnel with ties to the parish. It includes more than 1,800 photos of veterans with their names and military branches.

The display will open Saturday and continue for a month after the parish’s Veteran’s Day ceremony Nov. 11.

To submit a photo online, log on to the Iberville Parish website at http://www.ibervilleparish.com. Look on the home page for the section on submitting a photo for the Veterans Wall.

Photos also may be dropped off for scanning at the parish libraries in Plaquemine, White Castle and East Iberville or at the Iberville Visitors Center in North Iberville.

Be sure to designate the branch of the military the veteran served: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard or Marines. Photos submitted digitally must be high resolution.
