Boston Celtics player Brandon Bass is scheduled to headline a fundraising event for the St. Vincent de Paul Uniforms for Kids drive Tuesday in New Roads.

“A Night with Brandon Bass and Friends” will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Julien Poydras Museum & Arts Center, 500 W. Main St. Admission is $25.

Children may attend free of charge, but must be accompanied by a parent.

The fundraiser will feature a silent auction and LSU men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones as the guest speaker.

Then on July 25, Bass will host a free basketball camp at the William H. Scott Civic Center from 9 a.m. until noon.

The Reachback Basketball Camp is for boys and girls ages 7 to 15. Registration is limited to the first 100 campers.

Registration forms, available on New Roads’ website, must be completed and hand-delivered at City Hall, or faxed to (504) 520-7934 or (225) 638-5368 by Monday.

The camp will include station training in the fundamentals of basketball, a skills contest and a 3-on-3 competition.

Each camper will receive a camp T-shirt, prizes and an autographed photo of Bass.

Christmas in July

The West Baton Rouge Historical Association will host its seventh annual “Christmas in July” Card Party on July 30 at the West Baton Rouge Community Center, 749 N. Jefferson.

A tax-deductible donation of $25 per person benefits the nonprofit organization.

The 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. event will feature food, door prizes and fellowship over games of bridge, hand and foot canasta, Shanghai rummy, Sequence, Pokeno and many more card games.

Dreamy Puppet Show

The West Baton Rouge Parish Library and the West Baton Rouge Department of Parks and Recreation will present Karen Konnerth and her Calliope Puppets in “When Night Dreams” at the Addis Community Center on Tuesday and at the Port Allen Community Center on July 25.

Both performances will begin at 10 a.m.

Following each performance, Konnerth will conduct free puppetry classes for children 7 to 12 years of age.

Uniform drive

Uniforms for Kids, a program operated by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, will distribute school uniforms to needy West Baton Rouge Parish students later this month.

The uniforms will be given to qualifying students attending the Head Start program, pre-kindergarten classes and first through eighth grades in parish public schools during the coming school year.

Distribution will be held from 9 a.m. until noon July 27-28 at Port Allen Elementary School.

To qualify, a parent or guardian must show proof of need.
