School garden talk in Pointe Coupee

Arden Bucklin Sporer, executive director of the San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance, is scheduled to discuss school gardens at 1 p.m. Monday at the Pointe Coupee Civic Center, 1200 Major Parkway, New Roads.

The speaker has built an award-winning school garden program in San Francisco, and her family operates an organic farm and vineyard in Sonoma County, Calif.

The art of Mardi Gras

The Krewe de Poydras invites the public to attend “The History and Artistry of the New Roads Mardi Gras” at 7 p.m. Friday at the Julien Poydras Center in New Roads.

There will be a PowerPoint presentation followed by a king cake and champagne reception. Costumes and masks are strongly encouraged.

A firefighter’s parade

The Addis Firemen’s Parade, marking the 50th anniversary of the Addis Volunteer Fire Department, will roll at 11 a.m. Feb. 12.

There will be festivities including music, food and games at the Museum Park after the parade disbands.

A historical conversation

TWink Cameron, daughter of Puffy Cameron, one of the founders of the West Baton Rouge Museum and the West Baton Rouge Parish Library, has written a book.

“Conversations with My Grandfather” recounts first-hand stories of Louisiana statesman, Civil War veteran and District Judge L.B. Claiborne, of New Roads.

Wink Cameron is the granddaughter of L.B. Claiborne. The book, which is available in the museum’s gift shop and online, is illustrated with historical family photographs.

‘Bear challenge’

Holy Family School will host the “Bear Challenge” event Feb. 11 featuring a 5-kilometer and a 1-mile run/walk, a jambalaya cook-off and volleyball and horseshoe tournaments.

Academy lottery

The Iberville Parish public school system lottery to determine which students get to attend the Math, Science and Arts academies in Plaquemine and St. Gabriel will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Optional Education Center in Plaquemine.

A football reunion

Volunteers are needed to help former Rougon School 6-man football players organize a reunion.

Wild game cook-off

The Dream Day Foundation is holding a wild game cook-off fundraiser Saturday at the New Recreation Center next to Sandy’s Daiquiris on U.S. 190 in Erwinville. Food will be served at 4 p.m. until it runs out.
