Flags to fly half staff for Boggs

Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered flags to fly at half-staff Monday to mark the passing of former U.S. Rep. Lindy Boggs.

Boggs, 97, died Saturday in Chevy Chase, Md. In 1973, she became the first woman from Louisiana to win election to the U.S. House of Representatives. She served nine terms in the House.

“Lindy Boggs lived a life of service, carrying on for those who couldn’t and speaking up for those who didn’t have a voice in the halls of Congress ... through her lifetime of service to the State of Louisiana and our Nation, she worked to better the lives of citizens of this State and represent our Nation abroad at the national and international level” the governor wrote in an executive order.

Flags on state buildings, including the State Capitol, will fly at half-staff until sunset Friday.
