Domestic violence bills pass Senate

The state Senate advanced two bills Wednesday aimed at generating more money for domestic violence victims.

State Sen. J. P. Morrell, D-New Orleans, sponsored Senate Bill 250 and 251.

SB250 would allow taxpayers to contribute part of their state income tax refunds to the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

SB251 would force defendants convicted of domestic violence offenses to pay a fee ranging from $1 to $500. The money would be used for shelters.

Both bills now move to the Louisiana House.
