Legislation aimed at safer vehicle transportation of dogs ran into a roadblock Monday in the Louisiana House.
The House voted 46-28 for the measure — seven votes short of the 53 votes needed for passage. Thirty-one House members didn’t vote.
House Bill 470 would ban the transportation of dogs in pickup truck beds and utility trailers on some 900 miles of interstate and other high speed highways unless they are in a secured and well-ventilated crate.
State Rep. Tom Willmott, R-Kenner, said dogs are falling out of the backs of pickup trucks causing serious injury or death to the dog and near miss traffic accidents.
“This bill will save the lives of many dogs and people too,” said Willmott.
