The state Senate overwhelmingly agreed Thursday to let inmates in parish jails work on churches and other religious buildings.

Senate Bill 8 by state Sen. Rick Gallot, D-Ruston, was approved in a 29-1 vote.

It heads next to the Louisiana House.

SB8 would include religious buildings to the list of places that criminal sheriffs can use inmate work crews.
