A proposal that would revamp operations of the state Department of Education won approval Thursday morning in the Louisiana House Education Committee.

The plan, House Bill 650, passed the committee on an 11-2 vote and next faces action on the House floor.

The plan would abolish the agency’s office of literacy; office of science, technology, engineering and mathematics; office of college and career readiness; office of departmental support and the office of innovation.

It would allow for the creation of district support.

Department official said the changes can be made within the agency’s existing budget.

State Rep. Chris Broadwater, R-Hammond, a member of the committee, said he would back the plan but still has questions about the reorganization.

“I think a number of my colleagues have questions as well,” Broadwater said.
