Louisiana Truth fact-checking Jindal

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s recent blaze of interviews with national media sparked the launch of a Baton Rouge-based organization to check his facts.

Louisiana Truth contacted Politico after Jindal told the national news organization that the Republican Party needs to court every voter.

Baton Rouge businessman Joe Traigle, one of Louisiana Truth’s organizers, said Friday that the group pointed out that Jindal refused to continue a state government ban on discriminating against gays and lesbians in the workplace.

A former state Revenue Department secretary, Traigle is a longtime activist for gay causes.

“We’d like to be a factor in fact-checking what he says on the national stage versus what he did in Louisiana,” Traigle said.

Through a spokeswoman, the governor refused to comment on the organization.

In the days ahead of being named chairman of the Republican Governors Association, Jindal went on a national media blitz after the Nov. 6 election.

He told Politico that the Republican Party is going to fight for every vote. He criticized Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on CNN. He talked about the federal health care law with The Huffington Post.

At the same time, the governor ignored requests from reporters in his home state for interviews, igniting speculation that he already is looking to the 2016 race for the White House.

Romney was caught on camera attributing President Barack Obama’s ability to attract minority and young voters on the president promising gifts to them.

The governor blasted the remarks to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, saying Republicans need to like voters if they have any hope of capturing their support.

Traigle said Louisiana Truth consists of 31 volunteers statewide, including some with media experience. He said the organization has no website or fund-raising plans.

“Volunteers are contributing their time and talent,” he said.

In 2008, Traigle clashed with Jindal over an executive order the governor refused to renew.

The order, signed by former Gov. Kathleen Blanco, prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, national origin, political affiliation or disabilities — all areas covered by anti-discrimination laws. The order added “sexual orientation” to the list.

Jindal said at the time that it was unnecessary to create additional special categories or special rights. State and federal laws already prohibit discrimination, he said.

Traigle said Friday that Jindal cannot push for Republicans to go after 100 percent of the nation’s vote when he refused to support Louisiana taxpayers because of their sexual orientations.

He said Jindal has the talent to resolve the state’s problems, but pursued his ambitions instead.

“Those of us in Louisiana, we bought a Trojan horse. We thought it was one thing, but it turned out to be something entirely different. That’s life and that’s politics,” Traigle said.

Why would anyone expect Governor Piyush to act like a real conservative? Louisiana should look forward to when this clown can make like his fake conservative buddy Romney and lose a Presidential election against a socialist.

Jindal says government doesn't create jobs, but then he says he has the job he wants. Has he ever worked anywhere else?

@Joe Traigle, twinkie1cat and NearBarbarian - May God have mercy on your perverted souls! I will pray for the Heavenly Father to help reform your gay lifestyles before you end up having to endure an eternity in hell. Please, reform your wicked and sinful ways before it is too late.

Thankfully, uber Conservatives of the Louisiana variety are going the way of the dinosaur. One of the reasons the Republican party is getting roundly defeated is that it panders to the likes of some of the narrow minded, backwards looking types appearing in this forum. The Republican party for now does have a solid foothold in the South, but even that will change with the passing of time, and rightly so. Jindal can feign the appearance of wanting to be more "inclusive" and appeal to a wider range of voters, but an elephant wearing a pair of fake donkey ears is still an elephant....just a more ridiculous one.

A couple of observations; 1. Bobby Jindal is perhaps the WORST Governor La. has ever had, this man is OBSESSED with self promotion (nothing else matters-certainly not Louisiana). 2. Soct B, is 100% WRONG in his statement above, there is no federal or state laws that protect against discrimination based on a persons sexual orientation. This is more of the Louisiana Family Forum ***** where they sell hate and ***** and get good $$$$ from the "silent majority." Go Scot B! 3. WOW, cousin Dave, you are correct the "silent majority" is with Jindal because they only believe what they are told, no independent thinking, there it is, Louisiana.

I am relishing the tack that Jindal is taking the national Republicans. He is trying to pass himself off as a man for all seasons when in fact he is an obsessively self-centered ideologue and political hack who when he is exposed will make the Republican look foolish. He will implode as he always does eventually. Then, he has to look for the next political job. He is a government man.

Cousin Dave: Tell the gay Christians of Baton Rouge and were in church this morning about how immoral they are, ok. If you are without sin, cast the first stone when you judge them. There is nothing in the words of Jesus Christ or the New Testament disparaging homosexuality. Neither is there any in the Old Testament except in using same sex behavior in the context of worshipping idols. NOTHING.

8) Comment by twinkie1cat - 18/11/2012

ScotB: By your logic the stupidly passed gun rights amendment should not be necessary either. There is no federal law specifically extending protection to the gay community, although anti-discrimination is written into federal grants and programs.

Bobby Jindal won't talk to local media because the locals know the harm he has done to the state in destroying the public schools, stripping higher education into little more than football teams, privatizing state offices and causing thousands of state employees to lose their jobs, and chopping the medical care system for the poor to bits. Out of state reporters are not in touch with the harm he has done and won't ask the hard questions. This is the same tactic he used when he refused to debate the Democratic candidates for office. As long as he can be inaccessible to the people who will hold him accountable, the coward thinks he is safe. Then he can pretend to be a good guy on a national level and, when elected, do the exact same thing nationally.

10) Comment by twinkie1cat - 18/11/2012

Joe Traigle is right. Bobby Jindal messed himself up from the first beginning by not continuing a guarantee not to fire people for their sexual orientation. This made him a pariah in the entire progressive community. It will not be forgotten. Now he is a symbol of the Republican party----a bigot like the GOP is. Politicians need to learn not to mess with the gay community, to support it and give it equal rights. In some cities, such as Atlanta, a politician cannot be elected to office if he is a homophobe. They are dealing with an educated and influential community that has considerable support from the mainstream citizens because they are mainstream citizens and those don't support them tend to also be racist, sexist, and anti- immigration. All bigots are first cousins of one another. This includes people who use false interpretations of religious belief to justify their positions including the Mormons and Catholics. Bobby Jindal is one of the worst of choices for the face of the Republican party. He is a slick politician with no more integrity than Jan Brewer or Michelle Bachmann. Even Romney himself would have been a better choice.

ScotB so would that assertion apply to the recent gun rights amendment sure looked like politics and theatre

12) Comment by ScotB - 18/11/2012

Jindal is right about not needing an executive order to protect civil rights. They AREalready protected under federal law. Creating an executive order to duplicate and protect rights already protected is just politics and theater for interest groups.

13) Comment by Manichaeus - 18/11/2012

After 6 years of Jindal's ministrations is ranked as the second most miserable state and is last in all manner of good comparisons and first in the bad. The recent presidential election created a kinder, gentler Jindal? So Jindal is leader of the Republican Governor’s Association, wonder if anyone asked the other Republican governors what attributes, other than fund-raising, are the reasons they chose Jindal as their leader? It couldn't be the results of 6 years of damaging Louisiana, that would be absurd. Maybe the other Republican governors (except Mississippi’s) are either ignorant or want Bobby to assist them in becoming more miserable states.Maybe Bobby was elected because he is from the only state where being governor is a part-time job. Has the media in Louisiana asked our blindly-obedient (to Jindal) legislators what they think of our national rankings? Or are they afraid to speak up even as our state goes down the tubes?

14) Comment by concernedcitizen - 18/11/2012

Jindal is out there promoting himself and looking for the next best job as he has always done. He ran all over this country raising money for the man and the party he believed in. Since the party's loss, he has realized that the Democrats ran an excellent ground campaign. He will take some of those ideas and use them in a bid for the presidency in 2016. He probably hopes to harvest these "groups" that voted for the president and make them his own. Jindal has no personality, talks too fast and looks sneaky. Even an imploded party would never put him forward as their presidential candidate. He needs to come back to Louisiana and do the job for which he was elected.

15) Comment by Scrooge - 18/11/2012

The silent majority were sure silent in elections recently, Cousin "Lefty" Dave.

16) Comment by NearBarbarian - 18/11/2012

Silent majority, CD?! HA! Far from silent, but definitely a majority (though a rapidly narrowing one). Your comments indicate why, in a pluralist and secular democracy, there are protections against the tyranny of the majority, state-sanctioned religion, and mob rule. Anyway, based on Mr. Jindal's apparent 180 degree turn last week, you've lost your champion. He's realized that the homophobic majority of the past is losing ground to an increasingly more tolerant citizenry, and being the opportunist that he his, he's not going to sacrifice his ambitions for anyone or any conviction (however wrongheaded). In view of the latter point, I think you're calling the wrong people immoral. The "gay lobby," as you call it, is consistent and committed to a group of Americans that compose anywhere between 2 to 10% of the national population. Mr. Jindal's not committed to anything so altruistic--just to himself.

17) Comment by Cousin Dave - 18/11/2012

For most of us, Gov. Jindal's refusal to cave in to the immoral gay lobby is an act of bravery. Keep up the good work, Bobby. The silent majority is behind you all the way.

18) Comment by NearBarbarian - 18/11/2012

Thank you, Mr. Traigle and Lousiana Truth. Please shed light on the corruption, hypocrisy, and secrets of the Jindal regime. The legislature and free press have failed to do so.

19) Comment by Warp7 - 18/11/2012

Amazing that this Governor can trave around the nation and public state lies. He is not inclusive at all in Louisiana. Like the rest of the Republican Party Jindal only goes after the conservative vote. He does not care about non-white votes in this state. Look at his cabinet and what you will see is an all white cabinet. Look at who he meets with around the states, whites only. What is amazing is that it is a truth finding organization that has to point this out. Where has the Advocate been over the last 4 years? Why has the Advocate been silent in reporting on Jindal? Why is it that the Largest Newspaper in Louisiana cannot get an interview with the Governor and ask the hard questions that need to be asked? Makes one wonder if the Advoacate is biased and supports right wing politics instead of being neutral or unbiased.

20) Comment by welcometothebananarepublic - 18/11/2012

I hope this group will expand beyond sexual orientation issues. Jindal and his administration have irrevocably broken the state of Louisiana, and now he want to do the same for the United States. Now that he is only granting interviews to the national media and has basically abandoned his position as Governor, people outside of Louisiana need to know the actual impact of his policies and decisions on the state. Perception is definitely not reality.

21) Comment by janbrady - 18/11/2012

That fact checking group will eventually suffer burnout refuting every single word Jindal says mostly because every word is malarkey. He is just as etch a sketch as Romney. Jindal now holds the world record for fastest flip flop with his staunch anti-individual rights stance to his new "we are the world and I care" stance. He. Is. Awful.

22) Comment by agagent - 18/11/2012

An organization was formed just to fact Jindal . . .why is that front page news? It is politics. “Fact checking” usually deserve to be printed under the “opinion” heading. Who is going to fact check the fact checkers? Better yet, who will fact check the newspapers?

23) Comment by 8point6 - 18/11/2012

This medium is very upset at Governor Jindal. I don't support him as much as I did, however, I do enjoy his not granting interviews with the local media and, I ESPECIALLY enjoy reading traigle's rants. It's all those "Christians' " fault, mr. traigle. Write to congress and have them pass a law to banish all Christians to the Island of Patmos. “Those of us in Louisiana, we bought a Trojan horse." Well, mr. traigle, you shouldn't have voted for him. I don't seem to remember this medium doing "fact-checks" on blanco while she was governor. Oh, wait. That only applies to Republican governors. Tigers get another win! Geaux Tigers.

24) Comment by lovemykids - 18/11/2012

"The Republican Party is going to fight for every human being." No, not it. The party is going to fight for every vote. It's no longer necessary to even pretend that what is said is not just to get the votes.

27) Comment by spqr - 18/11/2012

Yep. Piyush is a hypocrite. He spent the last year gay-bashing and then, this past week, blasted Mitt Romney for not being more inclusive. When interviewed nationally (the only interviews he will grant), Piyush was never asked about it.

republicans, democrats, independants, etc all need to do what is best for the nation, not what is good for the individual. that being said, it'll NEVER happen.
