A 37-year-old Lafayette man was killed after his Nissan Maxima ran off Cameron Street, hit a culvert and rolled over several times early Saturday morning, a Lafayette police spokesman said.

The crash occurred at about 2:20 a.m. in the 3800 block of Cameron Street, Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

The victim, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of family members, was pronounced dead at the scene, Mouton said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Man accused in shooting turns self in

A man accused of shooting another man in the thigh Friday afternoon on Birch Drive during an argument turned himself in to Lafayette police Saturday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

Cpl. Paul Mouton said Taylor Hebert, no age or address available, was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of aggravated battery by firearm.

The victim, a 39-year-old Lafayette man, is expected to survive, Mouton said.

Hebert and the victim’s mother were arguing over a phone when the victim walked up to aid his mother, Mouton said. Taylor pulled a handgun and allegedly shot the victim in the thigh.

The shooting remains under investigation.

Possible human remains found in St. Martin

A pedestrian in St. Martin Parish discovered what could turn out to be human remains on Friday, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The pedestrian called 911 about 2 p.m. Friday to report the remains, found in an area off Leland Road, the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

“It appears that the remains were there for an extended period of time,” the release says.

Investigators recovered the remains and will send them to the LSU Forensics Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services Laboratory for further verification.

“The investigation remains ongoing and there will be no further information available until the results come back from the lab,” the release says.
