Acadiana police briefs for July 4, 2014

A memorial fund for slain Vermilion Parish sheriff’s Deputy Allen Bares Jr. has been set up at Gulf Coast Bank of Abbeville.

Sheriff Mike Couvillon said many requests have poured in from south Louisiana residents who wanted to help Bares’ family.

Bares was shot June 23 after he confronted two men he suspected had robbed a residence south of Abbeville. Bares died hours after the 4 p.m. attack.

The suspects were booked into the Vermilion Parish Jail on counts of first-degree murder of a police officer, unauthorized use of a moveable and burglary and other offenses.

Bares was buried June 27 near his home in Erath. He left behind a wife and two children.

Anyone who wishes to contribute to the memorial fund can make a donation at any Gulf Coast Bank location by depositing money into the “Allen M. Bares Memorial Fund.” The bank account number is 1058584.

Victim near Duson died from bullet to the head

A woman found Monday on the side of a north Lafayette Parish road near Duson died from a single gunshot wound to the head, authorities said Thursday, citing a preliminary autopsy report.

Valerie West, 19, was found unconscious and unresponsive at 10:30 p.m. near the 600 block of Gazette Road, Lafayette Parish sheriff’s Capt. Craig Stansbury said.

Medical responders were unable to revive her.

Stansbury said the case is being investigated as a homicide.

He said police will continue to search for a suspect as a full autopsy is conducted.

St. Martin Parish death yields no arrests

Sheriff’s detectives in St. Martin Parish are hoping the public can provide a breakthrough in the death of a New Iberia man.

The body of Kevon Bobb, 21, was found inside a Chevrolet Suburban that was abandoned by two others who fled on foot early Tuesday to get away from St. Martinville police.

The St. Martinville officers had responded to reports of gunfire on Governor Mouton Street, then chased the SUV until it stopped on Ledoux Street and two men escaped on foot, sheriff’s Capt. Ginny Higgins said.

Bobb was on the back seat of the Suburban, already dead, Higgins said.

Anyone with information is asked to call St. Martin Parish detectives at (337) 394-3071.
