Acadiana Crime Blotter for July 3, 2014

Two Abbeville men accused of killing Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Allen Bares Jr. last week will face additional charges of armed robbery and obstruction of justice, State Police said Wednesday.

Quintylan Richard, 20, and Baylan Taylor, 19, were already facing charges of first-degree murder, unauthorized use of a moveable and burglary in the case.

Bares, a 12-year law enforcement veteran, was killed June 23 when he encountered two Abbeville men suspected of burglarizing a home near where Bares was cutting grass on his day off, according to State Police.

The two men allegedly stole Bares’ vehicle at gunpoint, which State Police said is the basis of the armed robbery charges.

Two detained after officer drug by car, hurt

A police officer investigating a shoplifting incident early Wednesday at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 3142 Ambassador Caffery Parkway was injured after being struck twice and dragged by the suspects’ vehicle, the Lafayette Police Department said.

The officer had detained two people and was told their accomplices were waiting in a dark 4-door midsize vehicle in the parking lot, according to a news release.

As the officer approached the vehicle, a woman got back into the vehicle. As the vehicle backed up, the officer was struck by the front of the vehicle, knocking him to the ground. The vehicle then drove forward, striking the officer a second time, causing the officer to grab hold to the vehicle and get dragged for approximately 100 feet before he released and fired two shots at the vehicle.

The officer was transported to a hospital with moderate injuries.

Detectives are interviewing the two people who were detained and are reviewing surveillance video in an attempt to identify the people who fled.
