St. Landry authorities warn residents of phone scammers

St. Landry Parish authorities are warning of phone scammers who tell residents they are delinquent on electricity bills or eligible for a prize, then ask for access to their bank accounts.

Sheriff’s Capt. Megan Vizena said the calls have been widespread and have one aim — to steal residents’ money.

“We are warning people not to provide any personal banking information or personal information such as date of birth or social security number ...,” Vizena said in a news release. “If you receive one of these calls, you should immediately hang up.”

Residents who want to file a formal complaint can contact the Sheriff’s Office at (337) 948-6516.
