Second man arrested in May shooting

An Opelousas man wanted as a suspect for attempted murder turned himself in to authorities Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Tyrone Keith Johnson, 31, was booked into St. Landry Parish Jail on one count of attempted second-degree murder, Sheriff’s Office Capt. Megan Vizena said.

Johnson joins James C. Hudson, 38, who was jailed earlier Thursday on one count of principal to attempted second-degree murder.

Johnson and Hudson were wanted in a May 11 shooting that injured one person on Sam Street.

The victim was able to get away after being shot. That person was treated at a hospital and released, Vizena said.

Man threatens worker in restaurant with gun

Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a man Wednesday who they say expressed his anger at a restaurant worker over a food order by raising his shirt to show an employee he had a gun in his pants.

Jerry Stevens Meyer, 35, of New Iberia, was arrested at his home later on Wednesday evening, Lt. Richard Fleming said in a news release.

Meyer walked into the restaurant at 6:30 p.m., Fleming said, and got into an argument with a female employee over a food order. He walked outside after a restaurant manager told him to leave, then threatened the employee and showed her he had a weapon, Fleming said.

Deputies later found Meyer, along with the firearm, which it turned out had been stolen, inside Meyer’s home on Wilree Street and arrested him, Fleming said.

Meyer was booked on counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, illegal possession of a stolen weapon, felon in possession of a weapon, terrorizing and possession of a firearm in a weapons-free zone, Fleming said.

Meyer remained in the Iberia Parish jail Thursday morning without bond.

Jewel thieves drop through ceiling in heist

Lafayette police are investigating a robbery at Andy’s Jewelry on Feu Follet Road last weekend when one or more burglars disarmed the alarm system and dropped into the store through the ceiling, officials said.

Sgt. Randal Leger said the store lost a “large amount of jewelry” in the heist, which occurred Saturday night or Sunday.

Leger did not state an exact amount in a news release on the theft, which was emailed to the news media Thursday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lafayette police or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS.
