Lafayette man, 81, dies following early morning crash

An 81-year-old Lafayette man died hours after he ran through a stop sign on Carmel Drive at 4:30 a.m. Thursday and crashed into another vehicle, police said.

Joseph Rachal was driving north on Noah Drive in a 1999 Chevrolet pickup when he traveled past a stop sign and hit a GMC Yukon that was traveling east on Carmel Drive, Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

The driver of the GMC received minor injuries. Rachal died hours later at a local hospital, Mouton said in a news release.

The crash remains under investigation.
