An inmate in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center was found dead in his cell early Wednesday.

Chris Jefferson, 41, no address available, was found unresponsive during routine jail cell inspections at 5 a.m., Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Craig Stansbury said.

Jefferson was a state Department of Corrections prisoner who was transferred to Lafayette on Sept. 14.

The department had Jefferson on hold on a manslaughter charge. Stansbury said he didn’t know if Jefferson was serving a sentence or awaiting trial.

Sheriff’s deputies tried to revive Jefferson, then let paramedics take over once they arrived.

“The initial autopsy and review of the circumstances show no signs of foul play,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a prepared statement.

Stansbury said a full autopsy is planned.

Photo released in social media theft

Lafayette police Wednesday released a photo of two men who shot and robbed a man after the victim posted a picture on a social media site of himself sitting in a business with a wad of cash.

The robbery and shooting injury occurred Friday at almost midnight, about 20 minutes after the victim posted the photo, at a business in the 1300 block of 12th Street in Lafayette, Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a release.

“The suspects were two black males wearing black clothing with white T-shirts covering their faces,” the release states.

The victim tried to flee to the rear of the business but was hit with a bullet in the back after one of the robbers shot at him. The victim, who was not identified, was in stable condition at a local hospital.

Anyone who recognizes the robbers or who knows something about the crime is asked to call Lafayette police or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS.

Scott home burns after lightning strike

An early Wednesday morning house fire in Scott was caused by lightning that accompanied thunderstorms, Fire Chief Chad Sonnier said.

Sonnier said a man living at 1337 St. Mary St. awoke at 2 a.m. when a smoke detector alerted him to a fire.

The resident opened a bedroom door and was “overcome by smoke, causing him to crawl” to another door and out of the home with flames behind him, Sonnier said in a release.

Scott firefighters arrived to find heavy flames coming through the roof and engulfing half the home. The home later collapsed, Sonnier said.

Sonnier said “several severe cloud-to-ground lighting strikes (were) in the area at 1:30 in the morning.”

The fire began in a wall of the home after lightning hit it directly, or from a power surge caused by lightning striking nearby, he said.

Scott firefighters were assisted by units from Duson, Lafayette and Judice.
