May 18, 2014 22:31 BR man killed in fiery crash northeast of Hammond BR man killed in fiery crash northeast of Hammond Advocate staff report May 18, 2014 Comments A Baton Rouge man died in a fiery crash Friday on a highway northeast of Hammond, State Police said. Cory Casto, 34, of Baton Rouge, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban eastbound on La. 40 about 1:20 p.m. Friday when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree, said Master Trooper Greg Marchand, a State Police spokesman. The Chevrolet caught fire upon impact and soon was engulfed in flames, Marchand said in a news release. He said the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Casto dead at the scene of the crash, which was near the Global Wildlife Center. Because of damage caused by the fire, investigators could not immediately determine whether Casto was wearing a seat belt or whether impairment was a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples will be sent to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis, Marchand said. Editor’s note: This story was corrected on May 17, 2014 to correct the spelling of the victim’s name.
