Lafayette crime blotter for May 16, 2014

A man wanted by Lafayette police since late April was arrested Thursday on counts of attempted murder, kidnapping and other alleged felonies as he was trying to break into a home on South Sterling Street, officials said.

Gene Tyler Celestine, 18, of Lafayette, along with two other men, ran from police at the Sterling Street home but was caught Thursday, Lafayette police Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

Celestine was caught and booked into jail on two counts of principal to attempted second-degree murder in a shooting that occurred at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on South Sterling Street. In that shooting, the alleged gunman, Derrick Williams, 18, remains at large, and Celestine was a principal to the crime, Mouton said.

Celestine is the reported gunman in an April 28 shooting that occurred at almost midnight in the 1300 block of East Pinhook Road, Mouton said.

He said detectives believe Celestine was with two other men when they kidnapped a man, forced him to drive his vehicle to St. Charles Street and stole his money.

After the three got out of the car, police said, Celestine turned around and shot the victim in the leg. The victim, who was not identified, was treated at a local hospital for a nonlife-threatening injury, Mouton said.

Celestine is being held in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on $760,000 bail on one count of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of principal to attempted second-degree murder, resisting arrest and unauthorized entry into an inhabited building.
