Unloaded handgun found on floor of elementary school

Sheriff’s deputies are trying to find out who brought an unloaded handgun to a fifth grade classroom at Westdale Heights Elementary Academic Magnet on Monday.

The unloaded .25-caliber handgun was found at about 12:30 p.m. on the classroom floor of the magnet school at 2000 College Drive, Casey Rayborn Hicks, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman, said.

Members of the School Drug Task Force questioned and searched all the students in the classroom, but were unable to ascertain where the weapon came from, Hicks said.

The incident is still under investigation, Hicks said.
