NEW IBERIA — State troopers are looking for a vehicle they believe was involved in a Saturday night fatal crash on U.S. 90 in Iberia Parish.

The crash happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. on U.S. 90 near La. 675 outside of New Iberia, said Trooper First Class Stephen Hammons, a State Police spokesman.

Gonzalo Lopez, 39, of New Iberia, died after he steered his 2006 Mercedes-Benz into a median in order to avoid another vehicle switching into the same lane in which Lopez was driving, Hammons said.

The Mercedes struck a culvert in the median, overturned and soon caught fire, Hammons said.

Lopez died at the scene.

A description of the vehicle troopers are looking for was not available.

Troopers do not know whether Lopez was wearing a seat belt or whether either driver was impaired during the crash. Investigators will submit routine toxicology samples obtained from Lopez to a crime lab for analysis, Hammons said.

Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call them at (337) 262-5880.
