Acadiana police briefs for April 9, 2014

Law enforcement agencies statewide are on alert in a search for a pair of Acadiana area youths who officials say are suffering from severe depression and haven’t been seen since Sunday night.

Ariel Blaze Robin, 12, of Leonville, and Henry Bieber Jr., 15, of Church Point, might be in the New Orleans area, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office and State Police said in news releases.

Sheriff’s Capt. Megan Vizena said authorities aren’t sure where the youths are.

“We’re grasping for any good leads we get,” she said.

Robin was last seen running from her Wenck Street home in Leonville toward a white 2001 Mercury Sable that authorities said was driven by Bieber. The car left the area at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Robin is white, 5 feet tall with light brown hair and hazel eyes. Bieber is white with light brown hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call St. Landry Crime Stoppers at (337) 948-TIPS or the Sheriff’s Office at (337) 948-6516.

Sheriff’s Office says beware of phone scam

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a phone scam by a man who is identifying himself as a Sheriff’s Office lieutenant, officials said.

The impersonator claims in the phone call to residents that they missed jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for them, Sheriff’s Capt. Kip Judice said in a release.

The caller, described by Judice as a con man, tells the residents they need to purchase a $500 Green Dot card or use another online fund transfer service to clear them for missing jury duty.

The con man uses the name Lt. Michael Harris or Lt. Robertson, and claims he’s with the Sheriff’s Office.

“The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office does not at any time solicit any funds by phone, matters of this nature are managed in person and do not require any online transfer of funds or any gift cards,” Judice said.

“At no time should anyone hand money or transfer monies to a deputy in the field. All transactions are handled through the bonds and fines offices at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office,” he said.

Judice urged residents to contact the Sheriff’s Office to report any suspected scams.
