Acadiana police briefs for March 24, 2013

A 2-year-old Acadia Parish child was killed Saturday when his stepfather accidently ran over him, authorities said.

Camryn Miller was playing outside the family home in the 3300 block of Riverside Road when the accident happened, Acadia Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Maxine Trahan said.

Trahan said Camryn’s stepfather was driving to a barn about 200 feet from the residence, and had to unlock a gate before continuing on to the barn.

After driving through the gate, “He then stopped and exited the vehicle to secure the gate,” Trahan said. “Upon doing so he noticed the child lying on the ground.”

Trahan said the incident has been ruled an accident.

New Iberia intruder shot, then calls 911

A resident awakened Sunday night by an intruder entering a second-floor balcony window fired two shots at the man, who later called 911 about a bullet that had struck his left arm, officials said.

Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Anthony Green said deputies received a report of the break-in at 8:39 p.m.

After reporting the break-in to the 911 Communications Center, “The resident then armed himself with a handgun and discharged two rounds at the intruder,” Green said.

The intruder, identified by sheriff’s officials as Charles Prince, later placed a call to the center about being shot.

Prince was brought to Iberia Medical Center for treatment. On Monday, Prince remained at the hospital.

Green said detectives were in the process of getting a warrant for the arrest of Prince, whose address is listed as 5507 E. Admiral Doyle Drive.

Body of missing Opelousas man found

The body of an Opelousas man missing since March 9 was found near his Sidney Charles Road home over the weekend, officials said.

Foul play is not suspected in the death of Joseph Simien Sr., 78, who suffered from the beginning stages of dementia, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Capt. Megan Vizena said in a release.

Simien was last seen March 9 and his family reported him missing on March 12.

His body was found Saturday morning just west of his property line by sheriff’s detectives and members of the Texas Equusearch Team, Vizena said.

Sheriff’s detectives and deputies along with volunteers searched on foot, in the air and on ATVs for days after Simien was reported missing.

An investigation continues, Vizena said.

The St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.
