The search for an elderly St. Landry Parish man continued Monday with Sheriff’s Office deputies, officers with other agencies and volunteers combing the area near Joseph Lee Simien Sr.’s home.

The 78-year-old man was last seen on March 9.

Simien was reported missing by family members on Thursday, days after he disappeared from his Sidney Charles Road home south of Opelousas, Sheriff’s Capt. Megan Vizena said.

She said Simien suffers from the beginning stages of dementia.

Man accused of animal cruelty in Morgan City

A Morgan City resident was booked recently on an animal cruelty accusation after a rubber band tied around a dog’s tail led to an amputation, police said.

Tyrone F. Thomas, 49, was booked on one count of cruelty to animals at 12:13 a.m. Friday, Morgan City police Lt. James Blair said in a release.

Following a tip, animal control employees took the dog from Thomas’ Sixth Street home and found its tail, which had a band wound around it, was infected, Blair said.

“The animal was seized by the animal control officer and after being evaluated, it was learned that the dog’s tail would have to be amputated,” Blair said.

Thomas was released from jail after posting bail.

Romanian suspected of money laundering

A Romanian national has been booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on suspicion of money laundering after Sheriff’s Office personnel intercepted the man driving a BMW on U.S. 190 west of parish lines, allegedly finding $50,000 cash and fake ID cards, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said in a prepared statement.

Dorin Munteanu, Romanian national with a Lafayette address, was booked on counts alleging money laundering, possession of fraudulent documents and traffic violations, Guidroz said. He did not say when Munteanu was arrested.

“Allegedly, Munteanu has been laundering U.S. currency at local Wal-Marts and Money Gram locations by using several fake IDs from New Jersey and South Carolina. The money was then being shipped to Romania,” Guidroz said.

Munteanu is being held on bail of $104,000. Guidroz said officers with his office’s Highway Interdiction Team arrested Munteanu.

One dead in St. Landry crash during weekend

A Church Point man died during the weekend after his pickup ran off the side of U.S. 190 late Saturday and crashed into a culvert, State Police said.

Michael Cunningham, 45, was transported to a hospital in critical condition but died shortly after reaching the hospital, Trooper 1st Class Stephen Hammons said in a release.

Cunningham was driving west on U.S. 190 at 11:40 p.m. when he ran off the right side and into a ditch, hitting the cement culvert, Hammons said.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt and might have been intoxicated, Hammons said. Toxicology samples were sent to the state Crime Lab for analysis in an investigation that is ongoing.
