Acadiana Crime Blotter for Feb. 27, 2014

A Lafayette man who reported seeing other people in his apartment in the 800 block of South College Road early Wednesday morning grabbed a handgun and fired a few times with some of the bullets entering other apartments but injuring no one, Lafayette police said.

Police responded at about 3 a.m. to the shots and found Larry Rogers in the middle of South College Road with a gun in his hands, Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.

Several witnesses said no one was in the apartment with Rogers when he fired the shots.

Officers booked Rogers, 37, into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on counts of criminal damage to property, illegal discharge of a weapon in city limits, felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen weapon.

Opelousas man faces drug distribution counts

An Opelousas man has been booked on counts of hauling marijuana, crack cocaine and designer drugs into St. Landry Parish following a Sheriff’s Office undercover investigation, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said.

Michael A. Cain, 31, 177 Midway Exit Drive, Opelousas, did not put up a fight when he was arrested at his home Feb. 19, Guidroz said in a news release Wednesday.

“The street value of just the marijuana alone was worth $135,000,” Guidroz said.

Cain is accused of transporting the drugs from Texas in several vehicles with hidden compartments.

He is being held without bail on counts of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, crack cocaine and Ecstasy, transactions involving drug sales, possession of drug paraphernalia, and one count of having drugs in a drug-free zone, the news release said.

Morgan City names Banks chief of police

Morgan City’s assistant chief of police was appointed by City Council members Tuesday to lead the department in the wake of Chief Travis Crouch’s death Feb. 8.

Michael Banks Sr., a 30-year veteran of the department, takes over a department that’s recovering from Crouch’s suicide in Mississippi.

Banks, 54, is a lifelong resident of the city in eastern St. Mary Parish, graduating from Morgan City High.

He began his career in law enforcement in Morgan City as a jailer in 1983, according to the department’s website.

Suspect, 40, arrested in October shooting

A Morgan City man wanted since October in the shooting and wounding of two people was arrested this week by Terrebonne Parish sheriff’s deputies in the Houma area, officials said.

Barron F. Kenner was booked in Terrebonne Parish, and on Wednesday was awaiting transport back to Morgan City, police Lt. James Blair said in a news release.

Kenner, 40, was booked on two counts of attempted second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a firearm in a firearm-free zone.

Kenner is a suspect in the 10 a.m. shooting Oct. 21 that left two people wounded near Federal Avenue and Orange Street near Julia B. Maitland Elementary School, Blair said.

Blair said Morgan City detectives have sought Kenner since the shooting, and aided Terrebonne Parish detectives in locating the suspect.
