Lafayette crime blotter for Feb. 19, 2014

A Kaplan man fled from a state trooper who recognized the wanted 32-year-old after stopping him Monday east of Maurice, beginning a chase to Kaplan that ended hours later after finding the muddied man under a home.

Robert Sinegal was driving a Saab near Maurice with passenger Lawrence Julien, 54, at 6 p.m. when a trooper pulled the car over, Trooper 1st Class Stephen Hammons said in a news release.

Sinegal allegedly gave a false ID to the trooper, who recognized Sinegal as wanted by the Louisiana Office of Probation and Parole.

“Before he could be taken into custody, Sinegal ran back to his vehicle and fled the troopers,” Hammons said.

After that, Hammons said, the chase was on, reaching speeds of 95 mph in a pursuit that ran for miles back to Kaplan, where Sinegal and Julien abandoned the Saab in the 800 block of Lemaire Street.

Julien surrendered to police but Sinegal took off, forcing Kaplan police officers and deputies with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office to assist State Police in setting up a parameter around the area.

At 10:40 p.m. officers found a muddy Sinegal beneath a home, Hammons said.

Sinegal was booked into the Vermilion Parish Jail on a warrant for probation violation and on counts of speeding, resisting arrest, flight from an officer, driving with a suspended license, littering, reckless operation of a vehicle and simple criminal damage to property.

Julien was booked on counts of resisting arrest, interfering with the duties of a state trooper and criminal conspiracy.

The State Police release did not state whether bail had been set for the pair.
