Lafayette crime blotter for Feb. 7, 2014

A masked man held up a branch of Chase Bank on West Pinhook Road on Thursday morning, then fled with the cash, Lafayette police said.

A teller told Lafayette detectives that a man demanded cash, but he did not brandish a weapon, Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.

No injuries were reported.

The robber is described as a thin black man about 5 feet 6 inches tall wearing a tan shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information can call Lafayette police or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS.

Sheriff’s official warns of scam calls to elderly

Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators are looking into a possible telephone scam targeting elderly residents.

Capt. Kip Judice said calls are being made to elderly residents by people claiming to be with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The callers tell the residents that he or she has missed a court date and that a warrant will be issued for their arrest if money is not paid quickly.

Judice said the Sheriff’s Office does not solicit money over the phone.

He also warned residents that they should not give personal information over the phone unless the resident is sure it’s a legitimate operation.

Third St. Landry thefts suspect arrested

A third suspect in a rash of St. Landry Parish thefts last year has been arrested, Sheriff’s Office officials said.

Justin Babineaux, 22, of Carencro, was booked into the parish jail on six counts of felony theft, one count of simple burglary and one count of theft under $500. The value of the property is estimated at $19,875, Capt. Megan Vizena said in a release.

Babineaux’s bail has been set at $31,000.

The thefts and break-ins occurred in September and October 2013 in or near Arnaudville, Leonville and Port Barre, all in St. Landry Parish.

The goods stolen include four-wheel all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles built for dirt riding, lawn mowers and other outdoors equipment, Vizena said.

Two others were arrested in the thefts: Mickail Lowell Gould, 23, was booked in November, and Lee Covington VI, 34, in October.

“These arrests were made possible by a tip that was received through St. Landry Crime Stoppers,” Vizena said.

Most of the equipment that was reported stolen has been recovered and detectives are in the process of returning the property to the owners, she said.
