Acadiana police and fire briefs for Dec. 19, 2013

St. Landry authorities on Tuesday located Arthur Tillett, the husband of a woman missing since July, in Omega, Ga., where detectives have been sent to question him.

Tillett, 59, is a person of interest in the disappearance of Sandra Tillett, 64, who was reported missing by her out-of-state daughter, Capt. Megan Vizena said.

Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said in a news release that Sandra Tillett was last seen in July at the couple’s residence at 499 Carrington Place, Opelousas.

Arthur Tillett became a person of interest to St. Landry authorities when statements he made Saturday to detectives turned out to be false. Detectives returning to question him Sunday found the residence empty and Tillett nowhere to be found, Vizena said.

Guidroz and Vizena did not say how Tillett was found in Georgia or what led Omega police to detain him.

Anyone with information on where Sandra Tillett might be can call the St. Landry Sheriff’s Office at (337) 948-6516 or Crime Stoppers at (337) 948-TIPS.

Deputies investigating rash of robberies

Lafayette Parish sheriff’s detectives are investigating three robberies in four days, two of them in grocery stores, Sheriff’s Capt. Kip Judice said.

The first occurred at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of Roper Road outside Scott when an unarmed man with his face hidden demanded cash from an employee of Shiloh Grocery Store.

The clerk saw that the thief had no weapon and reached for a bat, Judice said, but didn’t get a chance to swing it before the bandit grabbed an iPad that was lying on the counter and fled on foot.

Judice said surveillance showed the thief was heavily disguised.

The second robbery occurred Sunday at 6:42 p.m. when a man washing his truck at a car wash in the 400 block of Bonin Road was robbed by a man who walked up, demanded his cash and a cellphone. Judice said the victim had no phone to hand over but did lose an undetermined amount of cash.

The third was Tuesday at 5:14 p.m., when a Dollar General clerk in the 1200 block of Carmel Drive surrendered an undetermined amount of cash to a thief.

The clerk told investigators a man wearing a black jacket with a hoodie, a blue bandana over his mouth and chin, red gloves, khaki pants and white sneakers demanded cash.

He also had a small handgun, Judice said, and took off running into a coulee that runs toward Lafayette Regional Airport.

“In light of the robberies, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone seeing anything suspicious around convenience stores to contact 911,” Judice said.

Opelousas man booked in attempted murder

Kwame Stevens fired four shots at another man Friday, missing his target, but apparently didn’t give up, police said.

On Tuesday at 4:20 p.m., Stevens saw the man again near Blanchard and Oak streets.

This time, he fired seven shots and hit the victim once in the hand, Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow said.

On Wednesday morning, after receiving a tip, police caught Stevens after a brief foot race.

Stevens, 22, of Opelousas, was booked on one count each of attempted first-degree murder and resisting an officer.

Gallow said the investigation revealed that the shooting was drug related.

Three more suspects booked in bank robbery

The remaining suspects in a Dec. 11 robbery of Church Point Bank & Trust, all with the last name of Lazaro, were arrested Tuesday near Eunice.

Jahmihron Lazaro was booked on one count of armed robbery, and Shawnquela Lazaro and Charlotte Lazaro were booked on one count each of accessory after the fact by harboring a fugitive, Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Maxine Trahan said in a release.

The arrests followed that of Mitchell Lazaro, who surrendered to police at 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Trahan did not explain if the suspects are related or, if so, how they’re related.

Mitchell Lazaro and Jahmihron Lazaro are each being held in lieu of $500,000 bail. Shawnquela Lazaro and Charlotte Lazaro are in jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Lafayette teen booked in armed bank heist

Lafayette police early Wednesday arrested the alleged gunman who held up a West Willow Street credit union Dec. 10, officials said.

Jamikal Phillips, 17, of Lafayette, was found at a Lafayette hotel and booked into the Parish Correctional Center at 3:30 a.m. on one count of armed robbery, Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.

Phillips’ arrest follows other arrests made Monday when Ronald Taylor Jr. and Roderick R. Cormier were booked on one count each of principal to armed robbery.

Phillips reportedly walked into the Section 705 Federal Credit Union Dec. 10 wearing a mask, pulled a gun, demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
