Man accused of beating handicapped girlfriend

A Scott man told police he used his fists to hit his handicapped girlfriend 15 to 20 times during a drunken argument this week, officials said.

Gary R. Squires allegedly beat his girlfriend at the couple’s 120 Jacques Lot 12 residence Wednesday morning, and was found later that day at work at Pizza Palace, Scott Police Chief Chad Leger said in a release.

Squires, 38, on Friday awaited a court date while he remained in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of second-degree battery, according to Sheriff’s Office records.

“He admitted to striking his wheelchair-bound girlfriend a multitude of times,” Leger said.

“The girlfriend sustained a broken rib and a fractured eye socket along with various contusions to her (face).”

Leger said Squires claimed he was trying to defend himself from his girlfriend.
