Baker Police arrest woman accused of stealing from Alzheimer’s patient

During a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon, Baker Police caught a woman suspect of stealing more than $50,000 from a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Faye Cooper Smith, 29, of 4702 Lavey Lane in Baker, was around 4:30 p.m. and later booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for charges of felony theft, forgery and monetary instrument abuse.

She and Dustin Gant, 31, are accused of entering the woman’s home about four months ago under the guise that they’d complete some odd jobs, police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

Instead, they stole numerous checks, McKneely said. He added that investigators believe there are other victims in the Baton Rouge area.

Gant was arrested by East Baton Rouge Sheriff Deputies on Friday after a brief foot chase.
