St. Mary’s deputies arrest man in shooting death

St. Mary Parish sheriff’s detectives arrested a Franklin man early Tuesday in the killing of a man whose body was found on La. 182 in the Sorrel area between Jeanerette and Franklin, an official said.

Jazmine Jamal Jackson, 20, was booked on one count of first-degree murder of the man, whose identity has not been released pending notification of the victim’s family, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Traci Landry said.

Detectives arrested Jackson at 1:54 a.m. Tuesday as the suspect walked on Main Street in Franklin. The suspect did not resist arrest, Landry said in a news release.

Deputies found the victim’s body after someone reported seeing it. Landry said detectives saw that the victim had been shot.

Later Monday, the Sheriff’s Office received a tip that Jackson pulled the trigger, Landry said.

“Detectives believe Jackson drove the victim to Sorrel Bridge Approach Road and shot him,” Landry said.

The investigation continues, she said.
