Argument in parking lot escalates, leads to shooting

What began as an argument between two people Thursday afternoon after one nearly clipped the other in the parking lot of an apartment complex escalated until it ended with two men being shot, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies say Brandon Sanders, 23, 11585 N. Harrell’s Ferry Road, followed a vehicle that he said nearly hit him near St. Jean Apartments on South Harrell’s Ferry Road, got into an argument with the vehicle’s driver and wound up shooting the vehicle’s passenger, a man who was not present during the time of the alleged near-collision.

Deputies booked Sanders into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Thursday on counts of attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon and aggravated damage to property, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

During the argument between Sanders and the driver, a woman, Sanders spat on the woman, which caused her passenger to become involved in the argument, Hicks said.

Sanders is accused of then pulling out a .40-caliber handgun and firing several shots into the vehicle, striking the man and the vehicle, Hicks said.

The victim then returned fire, striking Sanders in the abdomen, Hicks said.

Both Sanders and the other man were transported to a hospital and are expected to survive, Hicks said.

Sanders told detectives at a hospital that he only shot at the vehicle because he saw a gun in the passenger’s lap, and thought that he was about to shoot him.

He added he lost his temper and the argument should not have escalated as far as it did, Hicks said.
