Teen arrested in fatal shooting at apartment

Baton Rouge police arrested a 16-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting an 18-year-old man Wednesday afternoon outside an apartment complex near Sparta Avenue off La. 19.

Police did not release the name of the suspected shooter, but did book him into the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Center on counts of second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon, said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a Baton Rouge police spokesman.

Kino Harris, 18, 2156 Davenport Ave., died Wednesday after being taken to a hospital suffering from two gunshot wounds — one in his side and one in his buttocks, police said. The shooting stemmed from a argument earlier in the day in which the victim and the suspect exchanged words, although they weren’t fighting each other, McKneely said.

Police arrest suspect accused in kidnap, rape

Baton Rouge police arrested a 41-year-old man Wednesday accused of forcing a 21-year-old man into a Dumpster at gunpoint in downtown Baton Rouge, where he then ordered the man to strip and perform oral sex on him.

Police booked Derrick Phillips, 2655 Washington Ave., Baton Rouge, into Parish Prison on counts of aggravated rape, second-degree kidnapping and armed robbery, according to an arrest warrant.

Phillips is accused of riding a bicycle up to the victim on Aug. 4 in the 400 block of North 11th Street, pulling a gun on him and demanding his belongings, the warrant says. Phillips then took the victim at gunpoint to a parking lot at Laurel Street and North 12th Street, the warrant says, where he ordered the victim to get into a trash bin.

There, Phillips is accused of asking the victim “what he would be willing to do to not get a bullet to the head,” the warrant says. The victim was then forced to strip and perform oral sex on Phillips, who still had the gun, the warrant says.

On Tuesday, the Louisiana State Police crime lab identified Phillips as a possible suspect in the incident after analyzing DNA collected from the victim the night of the incident, the warrant says.
