A man accused of beating and choking his girlfriend and pushing and throwing her children Sunday night died after the woman fought back, stabbing him multiple times with a kitchen knife, Baton Rouge police said.
Jauvanda Carter, 34, allegedly stabbed Aaron Cummings, 32, after he threw her 8-year-old daughter to the ground and tried to push her 15-year-old son off a balcony when the children tried to help their mother, police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola Jr. said.
Cummings, 12020 Florida Blvd., later died at Baton Rouge General Medical Center.
Police questioned Carter about the incident, but she has not been arrested.
“Because of the circumstances, the investigation is ongoing at this time,” Coppola said. “Our detectives will determine if charges need to be pursued or if it was a self-defense act.”
No one was at the apartment Monday afternoon and Carter could not be reached for comment.
Police were called to the Summer Grove Apartments, 12020 Florida Blvd., at about 9:22 p.m. Sunday in response to a stabbing.
According to the preliminary investigation, Cummings allegedly punched and choked Carter, causing her to briefly lose consciousness, Coppola said.
Carter found a kitchen knife and stabbed Cummings several times while he was attacking her son, Coppola said.
Cummings was taken by paramedics to a hospital.
