Shantel Prudhomme, 29, of Lafayette, was killed when she was hit from behind by a car just before midnight, State Police said. Prudhomme was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish coroner. State Police had withheld the victim’s name until her next of kin were notified. Investigators are tying to determine why Kay Gaspard, a 34-year-old resident of Opelousas, drove her eastbound 2002 Ford truck into the back of Prudhomme just before midnight. Gaspard, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. State Police said in a news release that Prudhomme was wearing dark clothes, and that it was unknown if anyone was impaired by alcohol. Toxicology samples were sent to the State Police Crime Lab in an accident investigation that continues.
