Port Barre woman killed in Friday night crash Port Barre woman killed in Friday night crash Acadiana bureau July 28, 2013 Comments PORT BARRE — An 18-year-old woman from Port Barre was killed when the car she was in crashed into a cement culvert Friday night, State Police said. Corita Leben, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish coroner. Leben was not wearing a seat belt, according to a release by State Police. The driver of the 1994 Buick, 37-year-old Kevin Mayo of Opelousas, was arrested on one count of negligent homicide after he was released from an Opelousas hospital. Investigators believe Mayo was driving south on La. 103 at 11:27 p.m. when he veered off the right side of the road, entered a ditch and struck the culvert. Toxicology samples were taken and sent to the State Police Crime Lab. Mayo also was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on counts of reckless operation of a vehicle, not wearing a seat belt and driving with an invalid driver’s license.
