BR doctor booked, accused of inappropriately touching patient

A 63-year-old doctor accused of inappropriately touching a female patient on four different visits to a medical clinic was arrested Friday.

Dr. Howard Gidden, 3228 Chapelwood Drive, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison with sexual battery and simple battery, Baton Rouge Police Department Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

Gidden, who has been licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana since 1985, works at Gidden Medical Clinic, 3907 S. Sherwood Forest Blvd. The clinic did not immediately return phone calls Friday seeking comment.

The incidents occurred during four separate visits by a 24-year-old woman beginning in April and ending in July, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Gidden is accused of progressively furthering his physical advances on the woman over the four visits, the affidavit states.

When the patient first visited Gidden in April, he complimented the woman’s looks and hugged her at the end of that visit, the affidavit says. By the end of the fourth visit, Gidden kissed the victim on the neck and touched her under her clothes, the affidavit says.

Gidden first denied the claims to investigators, but later acknowledging that he inappropriately touched the victim but said that it was consensual, the affidavit says.

In 1994, in an unrelated matter, the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners suspended Gidden’s license for 30 days, fined him $5,000 and placed his license on probation for three years after an investigation revealed he prescribed controlled substances in “excessive quantities and for extended periods of time for four of his patients,” according to state documents.

Anyone with information about any instances of inappropriate behavior with Gidden is asked to contact the police department’s sex crimes division at (225) 389-3853 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-STOP.
