Male victim later died from injuries
Baton Rouge police are seeking a fugitive who was involved in a bar fight this month in which a man was seriously injured and later died, authorities said Monday.
Andres Gonzalez, 27, 2225 College Drive, is wanted on one count of second-degree murder, police said. Gonzalez is accused of punching Raphael Domino Jr., 39, 15438 Jester Ave., during a May 5 fight at the End Zone Daiquiri & Bar on Plank Road, police Lt. Don Kelly said in a news release.
A police report shows officers responded to the fight at 1:10 a.m. and found Domino receiving medical attention from firefighters and Emergency Medical Services officials.
“After being punched, Domino fell to the ground and struck his head,” Kelly said in the release. “He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries on May 12.”
East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. Beau Clark said Domino died from “blunt force craniocerebral injuries.”
Police did not issue any news releases about the killing — or the second-degree murder charge — until eight days after Domino died. Kelly said detectives had asked the Police Department’s media relations division to withhold the information because they thought they had a chance to catch Gonzalez before he might flee the area.
“Initially, the detectives had leads to apprehend him and it didn’t pan out and they had asked us not to put his information out to the public,” Kelly said. “They had an arrangement with his attorney that he was supposed to turn himself in (Monday). When he didn’t, we put him out as a wanted fugitive.”
A family member of the victim declined to comment on the case.
Domino’s best friend, Johnnie Brown, 38, recalled Domino as talented, caring and giving. “The last thing he would do was get into a fight,” Brown said Monday.
Police described Gonzalez as an Hispanic man, 5 foot 6, weighing 220 pounds.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the East Baton Rouge Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
