St. Mary deputy arrested in drug case, fired

A St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy has been arrested in an investigation of drugs being brought into the parish’s jail in Centerville.

Derek Martin, 21, of Lafayette, was booked late Wednesday on counts of malfeasance in office, principal to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, principal to possession of Desyrel with intent to distribute and entering contraband into a penal institution, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Bail was set at $100,000, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Martin has been fired, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Traci Landry said in an email.
