EBR Sheriff’s Office makes arrest in child’s death

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Wednesday in an 18-month-old child’s death on Monday.

Deputies arrested Willie Stone, 23, 4484 Floynell Drive, and booked him into Parish Prison on Wednesday on one count of first-degree murder in the death of the child, Azaria Johnson, spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said in a news release.

Deputies and Baton Rouge Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the Floynell Drive address at 1:30 p.m. Monday and when they arrived, EMS personnel pronounced the child dead, Hicks said.

Stone, the mother’s boyfriend, said he tried to wake the child to dress her, but she was unresponsive, Hicks said.

East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. William “Beau” Clark ruled the child died due to blunt force trauma to the head based on the results of an autopsy performed by his forensic pathologist, Dr. Cameron Snider.

Stone admitted under questioning that he hit the child while the mother was at work, Hicks said.

In a phone interview, Clark said there were no skull fractures or visible signs of trauma.

“It’s incredibly tragic,” Clark said.
