Angola inmate strikes guard with metal pan Angola inmate strikes guard with metal pan Advocate staff report March 05, 2013 Comments An inmate at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola attacked a female correctional officer Monday evening with a metal serving pan, prison authorities said. Warner Wiley hit the officer in the face and head with the metal pan around 5 p.m., according to a news release from the state Department of Corrections. The officer has been taken to a hospital for treatment, the release says. Angola Warden Burl Cain said investigators have not yet determined what caused the attack. “We don’t have a clue what provoked it,” Cain said. Another inmate helped save the officer’s life by getting the attention of other officers during the attack, Cain said. “Had he (the inmate) not, there’s no telling what would have happened to her,” Cain said. Wiley has been at Angola since 1986 and is serving a life sentence for a first-degree murder conviction in Franklin Parish, the release says. He was assigned as a janitor and was housed in the main prison. Angola’s Investigative Department and the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.
