State Police: 1 killed, 2 injured in La. 44 crash

State Police are investigating a fatal crash Tuesday on La. 44 north of La. 931 in Ascension Parish, near Prairieville.

Brady K. Delaune, 21, of Gonzales, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet pickup northbound on La. 44 at 5 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, he ran off the road to the right, overcorrected and crossed into the southbound lanes, Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer said.

Delaune’s truck then struck a 2008 Pontiac G8 driven southbound by Britney P. Bertucci, 32, of St. Amant.

Delaune was killed in the crash, Sandifer said.

Troopers believe Delaune was impaired and have sent a toxicology sample to the State Police Crime Lab in Baton Rouge for analysis, Sandifer said. Delaune also was not wearing a seat belt, he said.

Bertucci and her 2-year-old occupant suffered moderate injuries, Sandifer said. They were both properly restrained during the crash, he said.

whenever i see "was not wearing a seat belt", i think to myself, that person could be alive right now, but choose not to be.

tragic, but how could this happen on a straight section of nice concrete highway?
