Third suspect sought in Jan. 12 Sorrento slaying

Ascension Parish sheriff’s deputies are looking for a third Baton Rouge man suspected in the execution-style slaying of Gerald “Butta” Wilkins earlier this month, the Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday.

Darryl “Hoop” Jones, 41, 9429 Avis St., Baton Rouge, is wanted on one count of being a principal to second-degree murder, deputies said in a news release Thursday.

Wilkins, 41, 1123 N. Sabine Drive, Baton Rouge, was found shot to death along the side of LV Road in Sorrento at 7:53 a.m. Jan. 12, deputies said. Gunshots had been reported in the area between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. that day.

Jones shares an address with another suspect already arrested in Wilkins’ slaying: Cecil “Unc” Beals, 53, who was booked with one count of second-degree murder on Jan. 18, deputies said.

Investigators believe Wilkins, Beals and Calvin K. “Dirt” Williams, 37, 8539 Longwood View Ave., Baton Rouge, drove from Baton Rouge to Sorrento, bought gasoline, then drove to LV Road, where Beals and Williams shot Wilkins.

Williams was arrested and booked Sunday on one count of second-degree murder, deputies said. Jones’ alleged role in the slaying was not clear from the sheriff’s news release Thursday.

Around the time of the shooting, Beals and Williams also made several phone calls to a man who lives on Panama Road, Sheriff Jeff Wiley said.

The motive for the killing is unclear, but the men were “obviously involved in the illegal drug trade” and all “have extensive criminal records,” Wiley said.

Anyone with information should contact the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office at (225) 621-INFO (4636) or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-STOP (7867).

The culture I am speaking of is that north Baton Rouge culture. What I am talking about is, for example, that there are no real grocery stores in that part of town. Why..... because the people in that area will not let it operate. I once ran two stores on Senic Hwy, both were robbed on a regular basis, both had patrons walking in and just taking what they wanted and neither store could make a dime because it was all stolen. That is the highest crime area in BR and it appears these killers are from there. Ever look at the murder/homicide map? Why is it like that? Well because so many people in that area for one dont get educations and if they do they move out of the area when they complete school. Second there is an extremely high rate of pregnant women with samll kids and no father figures. Does this ring a bell? Why when the people from this area spead out, crime rates go up wherever they go? For example the Gardere area, once thriving now over run with thugs, crime and filth. What about Baker, it is now for the most part a ghost town. Why? There is a culture out there that is excepted by the community. That culture pulls down the neighborthood and the next thing you know is businesses leave, crime gos up and property valve drops. Look at the north side of Florida Blvd on Airline Hwy, it is like a cancer and it speads. This is not sterotyipical nonsense, these are facts!!

Listening to suspects' street names must be the only amusement police officers get these days. @yourkidding: LOL. @Widdy: your comment was remove before I could read it, but the rule is if you are going to spew stereotypical nonsense on this board, you must back it up with data.
