Addis police officer shoots suspected robber after chase

Robbery devolves to kidnap, standoff

A chase late Monday of an alleged robber along La. 1 in West Baton Rouge Parish led to a standoff and to the fatal shooting of the suspect by an Addis police officer, State Police said.

Brusly police received a call around 6 p.m. about a masked gunman running into Noah’s Pharmacy in Brusly, Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer said. Troopers were called about the incident at 6:07 p.m., he said.

Brusly police called Addis police for backup, he said.

Police believe the alleged robber realized authorities were coming, so he took a female cashier at the pharmacy hostage and stole an Addis police car, Sandifer said.

The man forced the hostage to drive the police car as authorities chased them down La. 1, Sandifer said.

The car wrecked at La. 1 near the Intracoastal Waterway bridge, Sandifer said, with the car ending up in a ditch. After the wreck, authorities and the suspect got into a standoff as the suspect threatened to shoot the hostage and officers, Sandifer said.

An Addis police officer eventually shot the alleged robber, Sandifer said.

The hostage was taken to a Baton Rouge hospital with minor injuries, Sandifer said.

The chase caused multiple other car crashes, but no one was injured, Sandifer said.

Brusly police and the Sheriff’s Office will investigate the robbery, and State Police will investigate the crashes and shooting, Sandifer said.

Another person with a gun. It's too easy to get guns. When is this insanity going to end? Our gun culture needs to change. There are guns everywhere. It's ridiculous.

Hat tip to Attila for trolling the tar about of just about everyone here. Well done. That's how you do it.

If this had happened in New Orleans, instead of Addis, and had this been an NOPD Officer instead of an Addis Police Officer, that officer would have been fired for using excessive force for firing two more shots than required. The NOPD is currently undergoing an inquisition by Eric Holder's Federal Office. A current NOPD Officer recently told me they are scared to even use tasers when taking down a perpetrator that ignores their instructions. When a call like this goes over the police radio in New Orleans, many NOPD Officers just ignore the call for fear they will lose their jobs.

No, it's actually pretty clear that Attila is being sarcastic. By the very fact that he or she stated, "If the police had not been armed." It's understood that police will be armed. Attila is poking fun at the mentality that guns should be restricted from all individuals. For the most part it appears they are agreeing with you that this was a favorable outcome to this scary situation. Except for the part where people can't catch sarcasm.

WARNING: Atilla's below comment is not supposed to be taken seriously, it is called sarcasm, folks.

@Attila, they probably didn't have a chance to see if he was abused or malnourished or came from a broken home BECAUSE HE HAD A GUN TO SOMEONES HEAD. I came from a broken home and had low self esteem as a child and teenager and have 2 wonderful children and educated my self and hold down a good job. Your stupidity totally shocks me,

@Attila, you are exactly what is wrong with this country, he was not ALLEGED. He was caught red handed holding a gun to someones head. I am sorry but low self esteem or lack of food DOES NOT MAKE YOU ROB A PHARMACY, STEAL A POLICE CAR AND TAKE AN INNOCENT PERSON HOSTAGE. How would you feel if it was you or God forbid your child, if you have one (hopefully you don't, we don't need anymore of your pathetic kind) You would rather spend thousands of tax dollars feeding, housing and giving medical care to an animal like this? You make no sense.

I hope the stolen drugs were recovered and returned to Noah's Pharmacy.

@Attila, what kind of drugs are you on. I am still in shock about your comment. Those type of people need to be removed in order to make this world a safe place to live. Great job by the Police.

Attila, you really are an idiot.

Great job by the Police. Think of al the money they just saved us by not having a trial or having to feed that animal for the rest of his miserable life.

Another senseless killing by the police. This person was the "alleged" suspect. He did not shoot at the police, he just threatened to shoot them. The didn't even attempt to find out if he was abused as a child, had not enough to eat, came from a broken home, or perhaps had low self esteem..when will it end? If the police had not been armed this young man would still be alive and have a chance a rehabilitation. I hope that this shooting will be extensively investigated. This was obviously a case of over reaction by the police because of preconceived notions or racial bias. Stop the insanity.

Call him the 'alleged' robber all you want. In my opinion, you stop being just the 'alleged' guy when you jack a police car.
