NEW IBERIA — A Mississippi woman faces a kidnapping charge after she allegedly refused to return a 4-year-old girl to her mother, who had been arrested, according to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Jessica Hebert, 47, of Picayune, Miss., was being held on one count of simple kidnapping in Pearl River County and was awaiting extradition back to Iberia Parish, according to a news release from Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Capt. Ryan Turner.
The 4-year-old was spending the night with Hebert last week when Delcambre Police arrested and briefly jailed the girl’s mother for allegedly failing to appear in court for a traffic violation, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Hebert, who had been visiting friends, allegedly traveled back to Mississippi with the 4-year-old and refused to return the child after the mother was released from jail Friday, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office traveled Sunday to Mississippi to get the child and have her returned her to the mother, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
