BRPD: Teen dies after gun discharges

A rifle accidentally discharged early Saturday morning, killing an 18-year-old Denham Springs man while he was at a house on Main Street, a Baton Rouge police spokesman said.

Trevon Wilson, 8639 Forrest Delatte Road, died at a hospital from a single gunshot wound to the chest, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said in a news release.

The rifle went off when five to six people in the house were examining it at 2:09 a.m., McKneely said.

This incident is still under investigation and no arrests have been made, McKneely said.

The house appeared abandoned Sunday afternoon.

Allen Holland, 64, who lives across the street from the 2645 Main St., home, said the house has been vacant ever since its resident, whom Holland could only identify as “Chip,” died about five months ago.

Holland said the man had lived in the house for about three years.

Holland said he has seen people, likely some of the man’s family members, coming in and out of the house since his death.

Holland said the house is one of several vacant homes in the area.

“That’s when the trouble comes up,” Holland said of vacant houses.

Holland said he was asleep when the shooting happened.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.

Why was he in a vacant house at 2:09 am. That's the most important question.

How dare you say "A smart gun" Ignorance that's all you said. This was a high school student who did no harm to anyone and was loved by everyone. He was somebody child and brother and friend. He was an athlete. None of y'all knew him and for you to speak on something you don't know about is foolish. I really cant stand when people speak ignorantly. No gun is a smart gun. Bullets have no name.So if it happens to you will it be a "dumb gun"? Sad how people speak.

This is normal, everyone should be gathering around at 2:09 a.m. to play with their guns!!

A rifle accidentally discharged? Rifles don't accidentally do anything. I've never read a news item that said an automable accidentally ran a red light. People do things, not machines. And a house with six people in it isn't vacant.

"The rifle went off when five to six people in the house at 2645 Main St., were examining it at 2:09 a.m." "Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Violent Crimes Unit" Didn't the officer/officers who investigated this ask the other people who were in the house what happened? Oh, wait. The others must have left quickly.

Firearms safety and the proper use of a weapon should be mandatory in all high schools. In fact, this country would be a much better place is everyone was required to serve a minimum of two years in the armed forces after graduating high school or college.
