Woman dies from beating injuries
LAFAYETTE — A woman found severely beaten this week died Thursday from injuries investigators believe were inflicted by her roommate, a Lafayette man now in jail, police said.
Gabrielle Spencer, 18, of Lafayette, died at a hospital Thursday, one day after she was found badly beaten at Morning Glory Square where Adam Batiste lived with Spencer, police Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.
Batiste, 24, was arrested Wednesday and booked on a count of attempted second-degree murder. On Thursday police upgraded it to one count of second-degree murder, Mouton said.
Batiste and Spencer were roommates, though Mouton said he didn’t know the extent of their relationship.
Police found Spencer at 11 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a call about an unresponsive woman, Mouton said, who had “sustained severe bruising on her body.”
Spencer was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Mouton did not say if Spencer regained consciousness before she died.
The case remains under investigation.
